Hello from Vancouver - getting back into riding

Hello everyone!

Originally from Alberta, I used to love riding (Western), but stopped mostly due to my allergies and lack of regular access to affordable riding throughout the year.

Now I am in university in Vancouver, BC, but have realized that I am feeling a bit empty the things that I used to be passionate about when I was younger--including horses. I definitely plan on leasing and/or buying a horse when I move back to Alberta permanently in about a year and a half, but would love to get a head start on getting back into the saddle, improving my riding skills, learning more about horse care and ownership, and so on and so forth, so if any of you know of any resources that I can access in the area (specifically more Western-focused), I would greatly appreciate any tips that you have. Eventually I would even like to try my hand at a few events. While it seems like there are few stables within the city, most of the Western riding seems to be a fair jaunt out of town, so right now I am struggling with finding somewhere accessible that I can re-connect with my old passion (Google is not being particularly helpful on that front either!).

Cheers, look forward to talking to you all!

Welcome. Me and my wife did some riding in Squamish/Whistler many moons ago while visiting Vancouver, and it was where my daughter had her first ever horseback experience....and her passion was ignited. Needless to say it holds a special place in our heart, and it's absolutely amazing riding out there in the mountains.

I'm not sure you'll find much anywhere near the city limits, although I could be wrong. Check out Kijiji or Craigslist for riding adverts, that's how we found our current lesson barn actually, and most of them advertise around here - it could lead somewhere. We found most stuff was to the north though, as you seem to have already discovered.

Can't help you so far as organized riding or eventing as we were just tourists, but have fun.
