Hi from Cali!

Hi everyone!

My name is Jessica and I am 18 years old an I hail from Southern California. I have always loved horses, and have a dream of one or more someday. My aunt used to have a horse but had to sell him due to financial issues. I have seen and own practically every horse movie(I have not seen Secretariat yet, so don't spoil it for me!), also I have tons of horse books on horse breeds and horse novels(Black Beauty and the Black Stallion series are my favorites.) I am in currently in college, not sure about what I want to do as a career. Hopefully, it let me have a horse.=)

I currently do not own a horse, but I can dream for now!lol. I own 2 German Shepherds, Molly and Tanner(Their picture is in my avatar, Molly is the Black & Tan, and Tanner is the Black one).I also love dogs! I volunteer at the spcaLA Animal Shelter in Long Beach, CA. I love to watch horse racing because of the horses. I love seeing them. I have had a dream of being in the horse racing industry and owning a beautiful horse ranch, but for now its just a dream. My favorite horse breeds are: Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Palominos (I know they can come in different breeds, but I still love them.) Paints, Appaloosas, Friesians, Clydesdales, and many other breeds.

Well thats about it for now, I came here to learn more about horses and chat with other horse lovers and horse owners.

Hi Jessica!
Welcome to the forum. That was a really nice self introduction that you did. I can just imagine you at home with those two big dogs hanging out on your bed or on the rug next to your bed.
I feel like I am hearing an echo of myself when I was your age. I grew up horse crazy but with few options to ride and no chance to own one. I had the good fortune to find a lady in my town that needed help with her horse, and so I got to ride once a week for a good year. It was a mutually helpful situation, and that might be what you should look into. There are lots of horses with owners that don't have time to ride them enough. They would either be willing to part lease them ($) or maybe have you excersize them. The catch is that you need to have some experience riding and I didnt' catch from your intro whether on top of loving horses like crazy that you have experience riding them.
Would you be able to take some lessons? I actually took some English riding lesson my freshman year at the U of Washington and got PE credits. Was way cool, but I got thrown and broke my foot! Oh well . . .
I don't own a horse now but I part lease two different horses and often encounter folks now that have offered me to ride their horses . I just don't have time to ride more than two. (I am a MOM, too).

So, maybe if you put up a notice in feed stores, at local barns and on Craigs list, you might find a way to get some riding in.
Just a thought.

I don't have any dogs, just two boy cats; Elvis and Oscar.

Hi and thanks for the advice!

I have ridden some horses, but I have little experience with horses. Alot people where my aunt lives own horses and there is open land where you can walk behind the houses and see the horses and pet them(I always ask first) but sometimes the horses come right up to us.lol.

I am in school and my parents are very strict on that. Its sad though, that Vet Tech's don't earn much, so I don't know if I would be able to own a horse for a while.
