Stoner isn't human, so no, he doesn't process death the same way we do. Horses do mourn of course, but for far less time than humans, and they have an amazing capacity to recover quickly. That's nature's doing, because a prey animal prostrate with grief wouldn't last long.
Morals? No, they're not 'moral' in the human sense. They do not understand good and evil or right and wrong. Everything they do is based on their perception of the world around them, how they're treated, and how they process and react to it. Their first instinct is survival of their individual self, then survival of their species as a whole.
I can't convince you not to care anymore, but it's up to you to find another creature on which to lavish affection; one you can own yourself. Caring about animals that you don't own and over which you have no control can be very depressing. You need to find another outlet for your concern, and not continue to internalize and obsess over someone else's animals.
