Just adopted my 1st horse. Or maybe I should say he adopted us. Let me share a little about him. He is a beautiful Quarterhorse....I believe they call it a Dunne. He was gelded very late in life, so he has many characterisrics of a stallion. This magnificent creature was tied by the ankle for 7 years. Never allowed to walk freely. It gets even worse..he was in a mudslide for several days before being rescued. When the vet saw this pitiful shell of a horse, he highly suggested to put him down. Well.....my daughter and I chose to adopt him. Even though many said it was a lost cause, we did'nt give up on him.......Now a year later he is running free, taking us on incredible horse rides and teaching us to ask the right questions. By the way when the vet came by to do an annual check up on the horse, he was dumbfounded. Could not believe that was the same horse.
I am a novice, very green when it comes to horses. Would love any information on handling and caring for horses. I think the best place to start is ground work. I am open for any advice and would be much appreciative for any horse schooling you can give me. This horse has given me so much, I just want to do right for him..mahao:D

Welcome to the Forum! I'm sure you will enjoy your time here, though there are always both good and bad times. It's all a learning experience. While there are always a few negative people in every group, I like to think that for the most part the members of this forum are very friendly and insightful. I've enjoyed a lot of great years here.

That's fantastic what you've been able to do for your horse. They really do seem to understand what we do for them and never forget it. I think they really do try to repay us to the best of their abilities when we've done well by them.

There is so much to talk about when it comes to horsemanship, as I'm sure you know by now, but if you have any specific questions feel free to ask away, whether here or in a new topic elsewhere. I'm sure you'll find plenty of help!

In the meantime we'd love to see pictures of your guy! :) He must be a very strong, determined fella to get through what he went through and make such a successful recovery. He sounds a little bit like my first horse in some respects, he was the same breed and colour and cut late so kind of studdy at times but all in all still a great horse for me in my early beginning years.
