Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a Junior in college right now where I am studying animal behavior, training, and enrichment. I currently have 2 horses (soon to be 3). Denny is my mustang who is 20. We recently retired him from ctr which he was phenominal at. He has a rough past from where he came from (he was captured illegally, not blm) but he is incedibly intelligent and incredible sweet. Our other horse is Winston who is a PMU. He is about 11 years old and we had him since he was 3 months. Unfortunately we also had to retire him from ctr because he was recently diagnosed with sever magnesium deficiency. He has always been difficult to train-very spooky, forgets where he is, forgets what a saddle is, twitchy......About a year ago we discovered he is IR and began treating it, he lost some weight (which is what we wanted) which is good, but we knew that there had to be more (we always though it ws because of his breeding and being separated from his mother at such a young age that was affecting him.) After speaking with a specialist in magnesium deficiency we discovered that his symptoms are very similar to other babies that were shipped from canada (which is where he came from). These babies were pretty much born magnesium deficient, it was just never caught. He is now on a new supplement that should help him collect his head a little bit (and of course increase his magnesium).
The interesting thing is that after researching it, we found that magnesium deficieny is common in autism-who knew? We are still going to work with winston, but my mother (who is in charge of all the horses) needs to have fun on a horse again, so next week our new mustang is coming home.
Sorry if this is long, I tend to rant:)
