I have three horses: Bram, a thirty year old draft cross who taught me to ride, and who has now retired to live outside my kitchen window; Quanah, a twelve year old paint pony who is sadly also retired because of a bad knee; and my riding horse, an eleven year old grey quarter horse named Houdini.
I ride hunt seat, but just for hacking out - Houdini and I don't show or compete at anything.
We live on a farm in the swamps of northeastern South Carolina, in a hundred year old farmhouse that belonged to my husband's great grandfather. We share the place with two border collies, a brittany, a mixed breed terrier, and a great pyrenees/border collie mix. And two cats.
We share the place with some other animals, too, whom I don't have to feed, like
The bobcat who lives near the mailbox (and who still, after two years, manages to make my horse go ),;
The hawk who lives in the trees on the far side of the pasture;
A herd of cheeky deer (who don't know the meaning of "shoo!");
A pack of coyotes with operatic ambitions (and who are the reason my cats are indoor-only)
And the six foot yellow rat snake who lives under my house - but who made a brief surprise visit to our living room this past spring.
I look forward to getting to know all of y'all.
