I have three horses: Bram, a thirty year old draft cross who taught me to ride, and who has now retired to live outside my kitchen window; Quanah, a twelve year old paint pony who is sadly also retired because of a bad knee; and my riding horse, an eleven year old grey quarter horse named Houdini.
I ride hunt seat, but just for hacking out - Houdini and I don't show or compete at anything.
We live on a farm in the swamps of northeastern South Carolina, in a hundred year old farmhouse that belonged to my husband's great grandfather. We share the place with two border collies, a brittany, a mixed breed terrier, and a great pyrenees/border collie mix. And two cats.
We share the place with some other animals, too, whom I don't have to feed
the bobcat who lives near the mailbox (and who still, after two years, manages to make my horse go
the hawk who lives in the trees on the far side of the pasture;
a herd of cheeky deer (who don't know the meaning of "shoo!");
a pack of coyotes with operatic ambitions (and who are the reason my cats are indoor-only)
and the six foot yellow rat snake who lives under my house - but who made a brief surprise visit to our living room this past spring.
I look forward to getting to know all of y'all.
