I've been riding for seven and a half years, and throughout those seven and a half years.. I've been showing for four, and leasing for three.
After deciding that Major wasn't the horse for me, and after convincing my dad to buy me my first horse.. I started checking the horse classifieds daily in hopes of finding a horse. I was being pretty specific: mare, Thoroughbred, at least 16hh, English-trained, forward thinking, and preferably, with a bit of chrome.
I found maybe three or four horses, none were in my dad's travel distance.. so I kept searching.
There was one ad that I constantly skipped over. An ad for a ten year old OTTB mare who was used as a broodmare for a few years (producing one Thoroughbred/Oldenburg cross colt) and just now getting back into work. I was a bit put off at first because of her age and the fact that she was off the track and used as a broodmare. After awhile, I decided I'd inquire to the seller.. and that began it all.
On a very nice Saturday afternoon, we headed out to see the mare known as "Honey". The barn was located out in the middle of nowhere and there were flies everywhere! The seller greeted us and led us back to Honey's stall where I saw a tall and lanky chestnut mare gazing through the bars at us. Once she was on the cross ties, I looked her over.
The seller explained that she was a bit of a hard keeper and that she cribbed, hence the cribbing collar. She told us a bit about her history before tacking Honey up and heading down to the ring.
Honey definitely needed a bit of work, but I liked her. She was incredibly sweet and good-natured. After talking about her a little bit more, we left and the next day, I asked about coming down the following Sunday.
This visit, Honey (who I secretly renamed Indie), went incredibly well. She was rounded and much more engaged. I decided then and there that she was perfect. She was incredibly affectionate as the seller and I talked more about diet and her particular needs.
On the way home, I convinced my dad to let us make an offer on her. The seller accepted and once she cleared the vet check and we finalized everything, she'd be on her way home and she'd officially belong to me.
As of today, August 30, and a nice long discussion with the vet.. we've decided that Indie is the one for us. We're going to be getting a x-ray on her fetlock just for piece of mind.. but we've decided on her. The vet suggested a joint supplement so hopefully she'll strive on it and we'll go on to have great times together and really form a bond.
My next post will likely be about bringing her home!
Here's a thread that documents about the final details:
Heard back from my instructor.
And this is my first, less than pretty ride on her:
