I fell in love with Char while borrowing her to ride with my Mother In Law, despite her nack for injuring her back legs I felt myself get very close with her and I couldn't figure out why.
On May 22nd I got some of the oddest news of my life. My Mare who just weeks before we had learned was about 20-25 was going into labor. I had only had her since late March-early April. I don't remember when my Mother in Law decided to take her on full time, I had only been borrowing her from the ranch for a few weeks before that.
May 23rd at 2am Katie was born. Watching Char deliver was one of the coolest moments of my life. I've seen cats do it dozens of times since I worked with the rescue. I'm thankful for all the times I've had to help with breech kittens. The sac did not break on it's own and Char stopped pushing. She's an old girl and I can't blame her, so I pulled off my shirt and waited for a contraction. I gave gentle pressure pulling the foal by her single extended hoof, my shirt wrapped around the leg to stop my hands from sliding. The other leg was tucked under her head. She wasn't breathing and needed assistance to get that first breath.
(More to come later, it's late and I was out in the sun a lot today.)
