DieselPony's Journal

I figured seeing as my mare is out in training and I'm looking to start riding lessons soon, I might as well start a journal. I had one before when she was just a baby and I loved going back and reading the progress we made a few years later.

So anyways my 5 year old mare who is on week 2 of professional training. I just got off the phone with the trainer and she is doing good, so far no real bad days, its always progressing forward. They have worked her in a crowded arena where she is really nervous about horses coming up behind her (she may play lead mare, but if she doesn't know the horse she is a chicken) they have put floppy saddle bags on her, a really squeaky saddle, and she said something about a noodle. I'm assuming a water noodle lol.
She also said that my mare is good about giving warnings when something is bothering her instead of just blowing. Which I'm really glad for. I'm going out on Friday to watch for myself.

And for me, I just got of the phone with the reiner instructor around here, she is pretty busy and if I wanted lessons there I could go to a group ride thing on Tuesdays starting in December. I may call around a bit more. I don't need much instruction, I need someone to really make me work for my seat. 2 years of very minimal riding has left my confidence in the gutter when it comes to riding my own mare. Hence why she is in training and I'm searching for lessons. Kinda tricky when the only barn that is actively trying to get new riders is one I have had only bad experiences dealing with.

Update:
Great day today! I went out and saw my mare, she is doing great! Finally got to see her, every time I planned on going I had either a last minute meeting or a blizzard rolled in.
They have worked her on cows, taken a trail ride, have her w/t/c, side passing, working on stops and now are working on other things, like going over the ground pole (she had an accident with poles before) and they mentioned doing stuff with noisy jackets after I went to climb up with my noisy winter jacket.

I rode her, only at a walk though, I wasn't expecting to ride and was freezing and the stirrups were way to long to feel comfortable, but wow they have her turning nice. And her stops are a lot better. Back up is still pretty slow though.
My mare is really spooky, but at least she is getting her confidence up to try more and she just stops and stands when she gets apprehensive. No bolting or jumping or bucking for this smart gal She is turning into the type of horse I always wanted.

She is staying until January now and I have the option of going out a lot more over Christmas break to work with them together on my mare.

And for me, I have a tester riding lesson for next week at a boarding place closer to the city. After this I'll decide if I want to keep taking lessons with this lady and move my mare there. After so many unanswered calls or people not having room to board or lessons, things are finally starting to work out.
