Smarter than you think

I went out a few minutes ago to see how the horses were doing (I do that a lot) and my Appaloosa mare was in the corral by herself. When she saw me she gave me her whinny that means she needs something. It seems that she had managed to undo the chain that holds the gate open, and she was closed in. Well, she could have pushed the gate and gone out but, to a horse, if it looks closed it is closed.
Anyway, I climbed through the pasture fence and opened the gate for her. She bobbed her head in thanks and then galloped off to where the rest of the horses were grazing.
I think it's great that my horses, all rescued from poor circumstances, understand that all they have to do when they have a problem is to ask me for help.
