What happened? Did the owner not want you to vet her, as in the owner will do it herself with her vet? Or did your vet come and say the horse is lame? Either way I'm so sorry, what a bummer! I feel for your daughter. It's one thing for your daughter, at 9, to really not like the horse all that much but it's another when she starts to see the horse as "hers".

Is your vet check today? Perfect time to be off so the vet can see what's happening. I don't think the cold weather helps either. I often hear people say that their horse is more stiff in the winter months. Our horse has been off too but unfortunately I think it is due to an injury that happened the first year we had her. Most of the time she comes out of it but it was bad yesterday. She drops her left hip and short strides in the right front. So frustrating, I'm pretty sure the injury happened due to poor barn management and could have (and should have) been prevented.

Also, she sounds like a great horse that can challenge your daughter. Your daughter will learn a great deal with a horse that needs to be ridden for real and a good trainer. You're in for a great adventure.

"I haven't done squat with her. My daughter has done it all." This cracks me up - if your daughter is anything like my daughter (and she kinda sounds like she is) you better get used to this! It's pretty much the story around here. And of course the horse knows it too and is very clearly my daughters horse. Those two are bonded! So, as much as I would like to be doing more with the horse I love watching my daughter learn and grow with her so I'm ok with it. However, as soon as I learn to tow the trailer I hope it will be a little different story but until then...

If your husband is on board you're way ahead of the game!! Mine wasn't for a while but he is now and loves it. It's calm weather today, great day for a ride. Will you just be riding and getting a feel for the horse or is your daughter taking a lesson? Either way, enjoy!

Wow! It sounds as if you found a true gem. I think it's very impressive that she could move to a new barn on a really windy day with strange people and stay so calm. She really does sound great. Our horse would have been and handful with all of that! Hopefully tomorrow will be a quieter day and you can ride. Good thinking on your part to make the most of your 2 weeks with plenty of lessons. Your daughter is probably stoked about having to ride and be at the barn every day, and on her very own horse (almost) to boot! You'll have to post pictures. Anyway, a big congrats and have fun! Oh, and after reading your post I'm not sure who is more excited, you or your daughter, lol!

How'd it go yesterday? Were you able to pick up the mare?

Lily loves her stall at home, she actually prefers it to outside. Unfortunately she is a total slob in her stall!! Not crazy about being stalled at shows but will put up with it fine. Most of all she is a people horse, would much rather be with people than other horses so at the fair, with all of the energy and excitement, she wanted to wander around with all of the people and kids.

Well, I'm off to get something done before the day gets ahead of me. It was fun to chat - I don't have many "horse moms" around here so I enjoy meeting people with like-minded kids like my daughter. Enjoy the snow today!!

Yeah, I think it would be tough if your fair is the next weekend. Ours isn't until the end of August. I haven't been to the S-C fair so I don't know how stressful or relaxed it is but the Snohomish County fair in Monroe is really stressful. Our horse loves it though! The first time we went she was getting very anxious in her stall at one point and I was getting concerned about putting my 9-year old daughter on her like that. We took her out of her stall to walk her around only to find out that was all she wanted. Lily, our mare, just wanted to hang with the people and see what all of the energy and excitement was all about. She did not want to go back to her stall, it was really funny.
