There is a group here in OK called the 'Oklahoma Equestrian Trail Riders' Association' or 'OETRA' I will try to find a number for them. We ride in the Arbuckle Mountains in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area & on ranches. We ride every day, weather permitting, schooling young horses. You are welcome to come ride with us any time. Contact us through our website at
It is only 5 miles froim the ranch to the CNRA, so we ride nearly every day in the hills and canyons. We (the girl that helps us and I) take 2 'greenies' out at a time but we don't ride together except when we meet up just so we can teach them to ride off by themselves. So, we're not the best conversationalists. Our whole focus is on making good trail horses. But you are sure welcome to come with us any time and we can at least show you the trails.

    Hey Cherie,

I live in Oklahoma too and am interested in getting more involved in trail riding. Any tips? Do you know of any good clubs or places to go?

    Hi Cherie,
I just read about the horse auction you went to and I feel the same way. I'm over in AR and the horses here are meeting the same fate. I used to go sell goats, chickens, etc and now I'm done. You are 100% right about not keeping the old going and the terminally ill horses around when we could at least donate money to rescues or take on a sound horse that deserves to live. The other day a woman I knew called me frantically begging me to adopt her mare. She had a terrible case of ringbone, super gentle & broke, but unfit to ride much and she was sending her to the sale if I didn't take her. I cried till I couldn't see straight, but decided not too and get a horse that had a longer life ahead of him who was in need and in the same scenario. It's hard to say it, but it's true, thanks for putting it out there.

I saw your reply and found it quite rude; I am actually working with an abused horse who is terrified of whips. I do use one in my lesson, but as soon as he knows I have it in my hand he starts to get joggy, nervous and it feels like I am riding a ticking time bomb. As soon as I drop it he stops the anxiety and calms down and manages a collected walk.

Yes, I am not as experienced as you and you may be older, but that does not mean you have to tap a horse with a whip for it to respect you, or gain the upper hand. I do treat my horse differently to others because he has been abused, and when I first got him I couldn't do anything on him because I had to gain his trust, and when I finally did - thats when I started to incorporate new idea's such as a lunging whip. (the first time I used it he went into the corner of the round yard and was shaking)

There are many more ways to gain respect, just because I am 15 doesn't mean I don't know what im talking about.

I am not promoting it here to sell it - just as a natural alternative to something that i found to work on my own gelding. Because i love natural products in my TB instead of drugs and bute, found this worked better then most things i've done. Why not tell people about it ? same thing with buying a product no one has ever heard of and coming onto a forum and saying OMG this product was great u have to try it? just trying to share the info that i have . and the experiences i've gone thru with it
