- Good afternoon. I have a question and hope you can add some insight for me. I have an older gelding 15 - 18 ish...signed over by an ex boarder. I have his weight up, he gets alfalfa hay. He gets loose stool. watery so it gets on his butt cheeks on legs and tail (nasty mess) I give him a small scoop of dry bran which helps some. I have used a jar of probitiocs .did not help . Biosponge did not help. He is better when on pasture, but at the moment, the pasture is just starting to grow again, and I wait until it is about a foot high or higher when I put them back out, less worry about the sugars and founder and colic , and they still get some hay on pasture as I have more horses out than the pasture can feed. I have dewormed Ivermectin and the power dose of fenbendazole. I have soaked the feces in a glove and dont get sand. In 40 yrs of owning and caring for horses, I have never had a horse with this problem. Vet kinda shrugged, everything seems normal.
