I need some advice for how to stop a horse from rearing up. He is 9 years old, we've had him for over 6 years and now all of a sudden, he rears when he's out on the trail, or recently, when he was just going out. He doesn't rear up high, but he has done this with me, (not a very confidant 55 yr old rider or a very seasoned rider) out on the trail alone when he's happy but I need to stop it and I don't know how to work with him about this. I have used a crop to swat him between the ears on the head at times. He was my 22 yr old daughter's horse and she is now away in college and the horses are left for Mom & Dad to take care of and ride. Any advice is very much appreciated.

I'm undecided whether or not to sell one of our horses; daughter is in college, has a hunter/jumper that we also have trail ridden. I don't have a ring or round pen or a suitable area to lunge. The TB mare is a bit fast for me but I have been riding her on trail every chance I get. Had a fall in August, broke my leg on trail from her spooking while we were cantering. I'm not a very good rider, but not green either. We have another trail horse also. Most of all, we love these horses, they are very sweet but not sure if I want to give them up. They are not getting used as much as they could be. The TB mare could go to someone who could use her for show but I'm afraid that she'll be in the same situation once again, going to different homes after the child is done using her. Has anyone else had this problem? We've had her for 8 years, it's her second home. I'm such a wuss!
