Of course she was softer after you showed her that you were the boss!...in an appropriate way, by ground training. She is starting to see you as the head broodmare and nobody takes a wrong step...

Beginner safe horses are often times labeled this way because 'beginners' tend to let them do whatever they want. The horse is the boss and while it doesn't act up, they tend not to pay any attention...

kind of why I just prefer geldings. I know a good mare is a joy, but I just prefer to skip the horsey hormones.

Nope. A well trained horse can be a "pasture pet" for months, and then give you a good ride. The seller sold you a horse with problems. NOBODY sells their best horse, unless they have to bc they...

When you mounted the horse tightened it's back and the back cinch went from tight to way too tight. I remove them as I find them a nuisance if not needed.

There is something to be said for untracking one after tighten your cinches. Obviously the back cinch wasn't an issue when you lunged her. Not untracking one back cinch or not could easily cause that...
