over weight mini

My 6-8 yr old mini horse gelding is a little bit over weight.hes got a huge hay belly!he is on full time pasture with a hay bale to share with 2 other horses.(naturally being him he doesnt share it with anyone)he is also given some performance feed that im primarily feeding my bigger horses every now and then. Plus he gets whatever treats my 3 and 4 year old cousins give him.he suprisingly does a lot of exercise. He is the top horse so he spends his time running my two 15 hh horses all over the pasture.its kinda good because my bigger horses don't like exercise and he makes them get a lil bit more.hes extremely fast despite his big beer gut.ill have to get a video of him running because he literally laps my other horses!im going to start training him a little bit more to be safer when my cousins ride him. Doing some lunging, train him to ground jump, respect training, etc.but I need him to be a little bit thinner.how much exercise do I need to do with him each day to get him in shape.ive only been giving him the performance feed to catch him so about a handful of it a day.ill post pics of him when it gets a little warmer outside.

Also do I need to start stalling him so he doesnt get as much of the pasture grass?

Stall him straightaway or tether him on ground with rough grass he will end up with laminitis if you don,t most mini,s come from bad grazing originally and they can survive and thrive where other horses would suffer,i don,t know if you know about laminitis but its a horrible thing for a pony to get

Yeah I know about lamititis.how much hay should I feed him in the stall?how should I work him when I take him out of the stall and he is all hyper?

You don't need to stall him. Get him a grazing muzzle.

Do not feed him grain. Minis get overweight verry easy and they get laminitis easily to. If you have to put a grazing muzzle on him (they can eat and drink throught it it just limits thier food intake) so you can more easily moniter how much the mini eats

Feed him how you think best chika just cut out all the treats, you know yourself you will be able to bribe him with a single carrot as easy as giving him any protein food,as for him being hyper lol best of luck,i once had the bonniest shetland you ever saw she was grey dappled you couldent have painted a better one, and through ignorance she got laminitis and it was a sin to see her crippled up that was years ago but I still regret letting it happen
