putting 2 minis with an old mustang

what do you think? the mustang is about 40 y/o the minis are 2 and 3. Will they still get the dominant gene in the herd? or will the stang that's been alone for 10 yrs have companions. The stang's hooves aren't good and the vets around here won't sedate him b/c of his age. He doesn't move very fast, but since i put the pasture closer to the house, he seems to be a little more social. I'm just worried about the initial hook up.

Can you seperate them with a fence for a few days first, and watch how they react to each other?

Personally, I dont house any of my mini's with the big ones, there are alot of threads on this very subject, it can be heated...:) I have to much invested in my miniatures to take a chance of a big horses for whatever reason having a bad day...even playing can be dangerous...

I had my mini with my quarterhorse and they got along too well. The big horse developed a massive case of herdbound LOL.

However, I did find out the previous owner stabled the Qhorse with minis and one of the ministallions actually attacked him and bit him up. I would not of expected that.

Every horse interaction is different. Even though my boys do get along I won't let them share pasture anymore. The big guy could easily crush the little fella by accident. I used to watch them run together and the mini tripped once and the big guy nearly ran him down. He turned at the last second. It was one of my deciding factors to separate them.

Your older horse could also be injured and at his age it could be a death sentence. I would keep them separated if you can. If you need extra shade on a temporary basis what about one of those 10x10 pop up tents? They are about $100.00 at Walmart. Would work in a pinch for the minis.
