I wouldn't recommend My friend Flicka if you don't like Lassie type movies... It's the basic story [spoiler warning begins], a young girl, a wild horse tamed by her and then the girl and the horse save their family's ranch [spoiler warning ends]. Sorry AQHA if I 'stepped' on your toes, I admit I like that movie too, it's a good family movie and reminds me of magic of the horse crazy phase that almost evry horse lady has gone through once, when everything related to horses was purely amazing . I'd still personally consider it as a Lassie type movie.

The horse whisperer was pretty good one, tho the book was better. If my memory serves me, also Hidalgo is pretty realistic (perhaps based on true story at some stage, I'm not sure).

Vaikka myrsky hetkeksi tyyntyykin, varjo seuraa onneain.
Ja pian taas uusin hönkäyksin, varjo seuraa onneain.
Hei tuu mun luo, pieneksi hetkeksi. Puhutaan, varjoni, valkoiseksi enkeliksi."

I actually meant the 1943 version of flicka. The new one is not to my liking at all. Sorry for not being clear. :)

That' the one I like as well. It follows the book more closely, which was about a boy and a horse.

A new movie about Secretariat is coming out soon this fall!!
As for movies that are already out... there's the Black Stallion, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Ruffian, Running Free, Dark horse as well as Flicka. My fav is Seabiscuit.

My faves are "Wild Hearts Can't be Broken" even my fiance will watch willingly, Phar Lap, the 94 version of Black Beauty is pretty good, Sherger, National Velvet, International Velvet, Miracle of the White Stallions is older and a little dry but I liked it. "Danny" is fun but may be a little on the cute side.

Unfortunately I absolutely CAN NOT watch the Horse Whisperer.....one of the girls at the beginning always reminds me of my daughter and I always turn it off in tears.

I have a hard time watching movies where horses or their riders get hurt too. I've cried while watching Phar Lap, Hildago, and The Horse Whisperer. It just hits to close to home.

Oooh, there is a 1943 Flicka version? I have to research!

The new version, actually I have seen it.

Let me resume what I have seen although it's such a big mumbo jumbo in my head so please excuse me if I dont remember correctly which movie had what name. However , SPOILER ALLERT

- an arabian girl finds a wild black stallion in the desert, tames it by the power of her soul and even wins a race in the end. Beautiful movie, horrible cheesy scenario, didnt like it. Except maybe Ali Al-Ameri's appearance :)

- a cowboy brings his QH / mustang / not sure what breed was it actually to an arabian famous race, he wins it after getting in lots of trouble and his horse is also wounded in the desert - I guess it's Hidalgo? Again beautiful horses, perhaps a bit less cheesy :)

- the only version of Flicka I have seen is about a young rebellious mare, a young rebellious girl, the greedy negative character who wants to buy her, the father who is rough but loyal and fair, some sort of rodeo event, Flicka runs free with the girl, they bump into a cougar (or what was it), happy end after some emotional moments.
I am sure I would have appreciated this movie a lot in the correct time, however I've seen it at...25 years and um, again, beautiful horse, not much of a movie. I'll look for the old version that you guys recommended

- Black Beauty. I have not seen yet the movie based on the novel. I have only seen when I was a kid some TV series where yes, Black Beauty was gorgeous, but he was Lassie + Captain Planet + White Fang + Ninja Turtles all in one. He was saving his owners from incredible situations each episode.
I was a huge fan at 8 yo, doubt I'd have the patience to review it now :)

I searched for the movie SR recommended, have not found it yet :/ I'll keep looking, I looked on IMDB and the reviews were encouraging as well
