There's an older version? Wow- I think I want to watch it.

Tamma, the original movie was based off a book that was written by Mary O'Hara in 1941.

There are 3 books total; My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead Son of Flicka, and Green Grass of Wyoming.

The abominations Flicka and Flicka 2 have nothing to do with the original book.

^^Thanks for information. Especially those books sound good, have to remember them when I need something new to read the next time.

Y'know, the OP stated she didn'twant any movies where the horses were just Lassie in a horse suit.

Spirit, Flicka, Running Free, etc. are exactly the type she didn't want to see.

Phar Lap, In Pursuit of Honor, and Seabiscuit are examples of movies about horses that don't turn them into caricatures. These are what the OP is looking for, not the sickly sweet, treacly junk.

I really enjoyed those books. They cover the same family, the boy as he grows up. It's starts with him very young and shows the story of Flicka and then moves on to Thunderhead (her son) and then the third book he's grown and gets married if I remember right. It really was a good set of books.

WILD HEARTS CANNOT BE BROKEN...lovely/sad, but a true story!!! About a circus performer who rides diving horses....of course the (Walter Farleys) Black Stallion the original one with Micky Rooney (not a true story, but still really good)...The Black has a couple of sequals but the original is the best.

One of my favorite's is(I believe it's called) Touching Wild Horses, based off a true story. I can't really describe it, but it's worth looking into! =)

the ORIGINAL my friend Flicka was great. The new one (simply called "Flicka") is not so good. Though I did not really like how they constantly called that Filly a colt.

Hidalgo was great, really. It actually went on for a very long to replace Seabiscuit as my all-time favorite horse movie.

Sylvester was not bad. But, I don't think I need to see it again.

A good one, that y'all probably have not seen is INTO THE WEST. That is such a good movie. Shergar is also a good one.

Dreamer holds a special place in my heart. I LOVED that movie. But then again, I have a soft spot for chestnut mares with Spanish mares.

I wonder if 28 Days Later counts? There are horses in it..... that was a GREAT movie.
