LOL, I like using a small sized piece of bamboo. Works great and never breaks.

I have several training sticks that I bought at clinics, but my go to stick is the mighty bamboo.

my wife buys them off ebay 3 at a time, that's why I even have one. Because she gave it to me, and that is why it is pink! Before that I used the broken stock of a longe whip and some hay twine.Which she thought (still thinks) was a disgrace.

Piece of dowel. Use tennis racquet grip tape for the handle or go to the golf supplies store for a handle. Bind/glue a leather loop on the other end, for when you want to attach a string, plastic bag, whatever else. You can paint it, if your heart desires, to orange or whatever colour tickles your fancy.

Mine is the handle and first 4 feet of a broken longe whip, wrapped with lime green duct tape. I call it my celery stick.

Lots of good ideas here. I also make my own. Originally made them out of 1/2" PVC, but Now I buy the 3/8' fiberglass driveway markers. They cost about $1.60 each at Tractor Supply. Put on your own handle or just wrap it with electric tape and attach nylon webbing on the oposite end for your string or a flag to attach too. No need for a fancy $50 signature carrot stick. Your horse will not know the differance.
