Is it a full moon?

So, today was the first all around good day I've had with Ice in....awhile. The last time was some time in December. It started off bright and early at 8 am when I went to bring him in from turn out...he let me halter him without a fuss, without stink eye. He wasn't genuinely happy to see me, but he wasn't pinning his ears at me either. Then after lunch there was a lull in activity before we had to get ready for the speed show...I took the opportunity to work with Ice for about 30 minutes, mostly we just worked on him respecting me aaand trusting me at the same time with lots of yo yo-ing...He ignored the "backing up" portion of the game a lot, which is mostly because theres no snap (i.e. Weight) to the rope so I was having to get pretty aggressive. However, he came right back into me, which is HUGE for him....his comfort zone has a 23 foot radius last time we checked. Lots of licking and chewing, a couple of sighs, one time he even came in and just let his head rest against my hand--it was great! We got his feet picked out and some thrush treatment on his back feet, brushed him over and then put him back into the frat house (larger stalls so he has more space and isn't as defensive). Then when it was time to turn out again, he walked right up to me in his stall and lowered his head for the halter! Then we worked a little more in the turn out and I let him loose.

So, whether it be the moon phases or just trainer magic (aka parelli magic), one month and it worked!

If the last time you had a good day with ICE was last December what have you been doing in the meantime???

Maybe he is just not the horse for you??

Even rank stud colts can be nicely broken in a month??

Too many people have horses that they just shouldn't have.

The in between months were just "okay" we did what we were doing and we did it well, but there was nothing that stood out as a marked improvement. Yesterday we had another "okay" day. I agree that while I may not be the best thing for him, I'm not going to pass him off until I'm sure that theres something else better.

Ice is not the kind of horse to wear his heart on his sleeve....his only personality is that he's a surly old man who just tolerates everything we ask him to do. Then it turned into grumpy old man who lashed out at people. Now we're catching glimpses of the horse he could be...who's actually excited to see you. He's always been a dream under saddle, work is never the problem. Its when he's out of work when things become issues.

RiosDad: There is no such thing as pretty training.
