Riding with a halter?

Okay so I rode for the first time in a halter today I also think it was the first time for my mare as well. It was only for about 5-10 mins and I think it went quite well.
I have a few questions though as I'm not exactly sure I did it right, what sort of halter do you use? Which is better? Do you use reins or just the lead rope and how and where do you attach them? Lol yes I'm a noob

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. Eleven-hundred pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster.

It all depends on the horse. How responsive or soft is the horse? If they are very soft and give easily, then using a regular nylon or leather halter is fine. If they fight a little, then I would use the rope halter. Some horses I wouldn't ride in one, at least not out on a trail. Going from the pasture to the barn or back, not as much of a problem. I've used rope, nylon and leather halters going back and forth to the barn. I've only used a rope one on one horse out and about.

Usually, I just use the lead rope. The rope is left clipped under the chin and tie the other end there too.

I've used several variations of a sidepull halter. My rein is 8-10 feet of rope with snaps at both ends. For leading from the ground, I attach one end in the normal spot. For riding, I attach the rein to the loops on the sides of the halter.

I use a rope halter and a 12ft lead, provides me with heaps of communication. I used to ride prin just now and then in a buckle halter and nylon lead attached to the side rings but have so much more control in the rope!

Thanks everyone :)
I rode again with a halter yesterday, I've been using a nylon one and she responds pretty well so I think I'll just stick with that for now.
