59 races...

My 9 y/o ottb mare raced in 59 races. Is this a lot for a race horse? Should I be taking it easy with her? We have been learning to jump which we both enjoy. I just don't want to ruin her... Any opinions??

Yes, that's a lot. Doesn't mean the horse has to be unsound though. Just make sure he's thoroughly vet checked, including x-rays would be a good idea too.

59 races is a lot. At what age did she stop racing?

You can look at things 2 ways. Either she is used up from a prolonged racing career or she has great longevity, is well put together, uses herself correctly, is able to recover quickly, is athletic.... She might have some nagging aches that you need to keep up on but I'd be more inclined to use her if that's what she's telling you.

I have a 24 year old OTTB gelding that raced until he was 5. Don't know how many starts he had but other than some shoulder stiffness, he is good to go everyday.

59 starts is an impressive amount of starts especially for a mare. This amount of starts usually means they are pretty sound. They may have some bumps and blemishes but they are hard as nails.

If she enjoys it and so do you, than just keep an eye on those legs and be a bit more proactive as far as cooling her out. I am a huge supporter of clay on legs, it gently tightens the legs but not too tight, and you can see "hot spots" and stop a problem before it gets worse. I also use ice boots after hard works to help cool those legs off.

Those hard campaigners aka War Horses (My OTSTB has 124 starts in 8 years of racing) are just great horses to have. Most have fantastic work ethics, tough mentally and physically, and have huge personalities. Enjoy your girl!
