I would like to say that I have had my share of bad experiences. ...stepped on, kicked in the leg and head, and once with my back turned a horse bit my side picking me up off the ground and shaking me like a dog with a rag toy. Why tell you all these awful stuff? BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL MY FAULT ! I got in the habit of turning my back on horses I should have recognized as irritated or paying more attention to the task at hand. Like the others said. ..most horses do not bite it is your job to relax, enjoy the time with the animals but be aware of what they are telling you.

I have a non horsey friend that used to be terrified that horses would eat her (not just bite, legitimately eat) and it took me a while to get her over the fear. Time and confidence help. If you are a beginner, I doubt anyone will be letting you interact with any horses that actually have a biting/aggression issue any time soon, so just be aware of what you are doing around them, set yourself up for success (as in don't get into situations where a bite could take place) and you will more than likely be quite alright :)

Stay at least one inch farther away than what they can reach. 99/100 horses bite because they're in the habit of being hand-fed. That 1% of aggressive horses, if you ever see it you won't mistake it for something else!

I got bit by a horse the other day because she was being stubborn and she got me in the really tender area below my belly button

Was really not that bad -- stung for a minute -- then all was well
