Don't forget your rein stoppers!

Just wanted to remind everyone, new riders and old, to use rein stoppers with their martingales!

I was distracted today, and didn't realize the bridle I had been using had no stoppers. I put a martingale on though.

Naturally whatever bad can happen does happen, and the ring of the martingale got stuck on the bit. My poor horse went running backwards in a panic, and I had to jump off (not very elegantly).

Thankfully we were both OK.

So don't forget those rein stoppers!!!

I wonder if this is what happened to me a couple of weeks ago when I fell off when my horse spooked.....I thought that it was just a spook since it was a really windy day, but maybe the ring got caught on the bit...

I'll have to check that next time...when I'm recovered from the fall!

The stoppers keep the rings of a martingale from getting hung up on the end of the rein or bit. If the ring gets hung up that close instead of sliding up and down the rein a horse can panic causing a wreck.
I don't have a picture off hand but it gives you an idea.

I DON'T LEAD 'EM AND FEED 'EM, I RIDE 'EM AND SLIDE 'EM.
