Horse has tail cut short, will it take forever to grow back>

We are looking to purchase a good been there done that horse for my 9 year old daughter and have found one we love. He handles like a dream, no bad habits, etc. He is a gorgeous horse also but for some reason his tail is cut off. The person says their grandkids cut it off. My question is, how long does it take for horses main and tail to grow back? Is there anything I can do to help nourish it to speed up growth.it is visibly unappealing but the main concern is the area we live in is fly haven and I am wondering about it being able to swat flies.

A horse's mane/tail shouldn't take that long to grow in... However, it isn't going to be a couple months and you have a thick long tail... More like 6mo-1 year if properly taken care of. For flies I would just invest in a fly blanket, it won't protect everywhere but it will certainly help. I would just feed him a good diet and braid/wrap his tail if you want to encourage it as much as possible.

You could put the tail up (youtube it), you basically braid it then vet wrap it, definitely helps! And you can add twine as needed for a fly swatter. I'm dealing with a chewed off tail so I know the feeling.

Have you checked to ensure the dock is not damaged in any way?

I know how ya feel.... I banged my horse's tail and I was so unhappy with how it turned out. Im hoping it will grow out looking naturally and get long again by summer. I will never do that again! It takes away from his beauty and im so mad. But I would braid it and wrap it. Make sure it doesnt get too tangled either

If you're really concerned about flies I would invest in a good fly spray, maybe a fly sheet, and wrap his tail and either buy a bag with the extra strips of material or attach twine to swat flies.

If the tail is almost at the dock it will take about 18 mos to regrow a long (almost to the heels) tail. It is best to not brush it but finger pick it so as not to break off whatever is growing. The tail should reach the hocks at around 10-12 mos. We watched the growth after dogs had chewed a horse's tail quite short before purchase.

Green Broke
We cut a big matte out of one of our mares tails (above the hocks) and it's still not quite full length after 2 years.

When my gelding was a baby he chewed off his dams tail all the way to the dock.(I tried to stop him and nothing I tried worked) it took my mare 3 years for it to grow back to the long length of dragging the ground again. I had wrapped it and brushed it as often as I could.
