Mare has started to turn her butt to me

Recently acquired a new 15y/o mare. She has a great temperment and gentle around us all. She is even mello in the worst of rainstorms. I try to be around her several times a day to build a relationship. She loves to be brushed and rubbed. Starting today, she has been turning her butt to me and slightly backing up. She does this near the gate to enter/exit her pen. It has only happened when I leave the pen. I am not sure if this is bad behavior or if she just wants to be petted or rubbed there. I have been cutting back on her time out to graze starting today, maybe she is upset she isn't getting out like before. If it is bad behavior, how do I remedy it? Thanks for any help

Howdy and welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like she's just looking for scratches on her butt, but it's still an unacceptable behavior.

What I would do is carry either a lead rope or a whip of some sort with me. Whenever she turns her butt to you...at any point... lift a hand above your head and give her a smooch and if she doesn't either move away or turn around to face you, give her a firm tap with the lead/whip. If she still doesn't get her butt away from you, give her an even firmer smack. Keep increasing the pressure of each smack until she moves her butt away from you. When she turns to face you, turn and walk away.

Are you or did her previous owner scritch her butt? I have a mare that I made the mistake of scritching her butt with my long acrylic finger nails. Now she'll back me right into a wall to get scritched. She LOVES it when I use the manure rake, that's when she's the worst. If that's what's happening, not disrespectful, just itchy!

I agree with smrobs, it's not desirable behavior, but she's my monster. I created her and I'll live with her. She's the one horse on the place who'll never be for sale. If you dislike the behavior, you can break your horse of it like smrobs described.

Oh, I'm all for giving a good scratching on the butt, it just has to be on my terms.

Dobe is my butt-scratch lover but he has learned that all he has to do is give me his "look" that says "Oh, pleeaaasssseeee scratch my dock" and I'll oblige but if he starts getting pushy or backing toward me, it's all over and he has to move.

They learn to contain their pleasure by kind of squatting down on their hind end and giving the "ZOMG" pleasure face LOL

LOL! Patti is a big, opinionated mare who has her own thoughts on things. Fortunately for me, she is very agreeable with whatever I want her to do and she's never ever bitchy with me. She just backs me into a corner when I'm stall picking and I've learned that if I'll just immediately go in and scritch her butt with the rake for a few minutes, then she figures she's "had her due" and life is good. If I try to get out of it because I'm in a hurry........yeah......well......It's a lot easier to just give her her scritches. I kind of figure that if that's her only bad behavior, I'm pretty darn lucky!
smrobs and dlady like this.

I agree with the butt scratching comments. This is one reason, as tempting as it is, we really try to avoid butt scratching with foals. They will quickly get into the habit of swinging their hip into you to get scratched. No problem at 100 lbs, but a few months later, you'll start regretting it...

Thank you all for your feedback. I think all she wants is to be scratched, but of course, I don't let it go on for too long and she turns back around to face me :)
