    Pre-purchase vet exam

I live in Minnesota and have downsized by horse family from 3 to 1 when I moved. I am now considering purchasing another horse. The horse I am currently looking at is in Iowa. I have never purchased a horse out of state, and I am curious as to what all I need to have done during the pre-purchase vet exam, as well as what you would suggest to have the vet do/check for. I am aware I need to have the mare I am looking at tested for negative coggins. What else would be required to have done at the vet in order to cross state borders (if I choose to buy her and bring her home to MN)? I have also heard to find my own vet in the area that the horse is from, instead of going through the owners usual vet.

Find your own vet that can be recommended by others in the area, and pull bloods. The vet can keep them, that way if they drug up for the vet check and three days later you have a psycho, you can get them tested.

Ask people in the area for a good vet. Don't use theirs! Call up and let them know you want to do a pre purchase exam. Ask what's included and how much. X-rays are usually extra. If your purchasing a horse who has been through strenuous work, or you want to to strenuous work, I'd get the X-rays. If not you can leave it to the vet's discretion.<br />
