I just quick skimmed the article, but 2 things popped out at me-
1. The amount of fossil fuels used to transport the waste...
Um yeah... because the foods on a person's plate didn't have to travel very far to get to your plate.......

2. Quote from the article-
Quote:
While much of the waste produced is considered toxic, there was no evidence it has harmed human health.
In many cases, a toxic sludge is created when metals and other toxins are removed from water used in the manufacturing process. If a company doesn't have its own treatment equipment, then it will send contaminated water to be stored at an approved dump.

Right....
At least there are approved places to take the waste.
Not so with the fracking solutions used for marcellus shale. Most waste facilities had to stop taking the nasty stuff, so the wise "powers that be" decided to just drill a big hole and dump the stuff in the ground....because dead livestock, earthquakes and poisonous drinking water are just soooo much nicer...
(Yes, that was meant to be sarcastic
