Wow, that is a pretty skewed article.

I loved how it said that .223 and 5.56 rounds were interchangeable!! SOME rifles are chambered to accept both, some are NOT. Go ahead and see if the neck pressures are the same for both. Shoot one of the rounds in an incompatible rifle. It won't hurt, at first, but in the long run.......

I don't think it meant all are interchangeable, I think it meant 5.56 nato chamber can accept .223....at least that is the way I would take it.

But that is not true that it is always interchangeable. That's what I am saying.

Generally speaking(though not always) it is Ok to fire .223 in weapons chambered for 5.56 but not 5.56 in weapons chambered in .223.
Think shooting .38 special in a .357 magnum.

    But we digress......

Personally, I am a scaredy cat...I wouldn't knowingly mix anything. But, your link says basically the same thing as the original article implied, that a .223 is safe for a 5.56 chamber (true to spec, not mislabeled or something), but not vice-versa.

    .

You can use .223 in a gun labeled for 5.56 as the .223 is does not build pressure as fast as the Nato, so you are safe.

You cannot use 5.56 in a gun chambered for .223, the freebore length and throat angles are different and you should not be interchanged Ammo as the Nato rounds build up pressure too fast and can damage the gun labeled for .223

My Bushmaster is labeled .223 and 5.56, some Colt A15's are too, but not all, check what is stamped on the gun

Missy, he gave better information about 5.56 being not good to shoot in .223. While .223 CAN be shot in 5.56, it is not without a price tag. That price tag is accuracy. .223 has become popular because it is inherently more accurate than 5.56. So why would you shoot it in a gun that will automatically make it less accurate. To go the other way and shoot 5.56 in a .223 is just not good for the weapon.

Bottom line is that too many people think they are completely interchangeable, when they are not.....really.

Maybe we ought to start a new thread about ballistic myths and let this one get back on target.

I was only kidding about the moderator thing. This is the same as "not vice versa" (not 5.56 in a .223) But, from your reply it IS a moderator thing!!! (KIDDING, KIDDING!!!).

I won't join the new thread. I ordinary just shoot and enjoy it - and I make a real effort in "real life" to stay away from the boy's gun babble.
