We recently had to put down our old female cat and our other old male cat died about 2 months later. They were in their late teens, but it still broke my heart.
D: I know how you feel! We had to put that guy down not to long ago :/. He was 15 I had him since I was 2.

When our ranch friends give away barn kittens they always say they come with a lifetime guarentee...if anything happens to it, they gladly replace it.

As the others have said, that is just the right age to start feeding "real" food, now that they are getting teeth, Mom is going to start getting more ready to wean them off herself entirely, understandably!
