Any rabbit experts here?

We have a neutered male English spot and a female dutch. The female escaped a week ago today. For the first three or four days she stuck close to their pen, but all our efforts to catch her failed. The next couple of days we didn't see her at all and only by a miracle did we see her and catch her tonight. There are several wild rabbits on our property and my question is...does anyone know if it is possible that she could have mated with a wild one?

I'm not an expert but I know alot about rabbits.

There is a possibility. All I would do is watch for signs of pregnancy.

If there are wild rabbits around it is 100% possible that she may have mated. It happened to me when my female got out overnight...whoops!

Crap. I was really hoping a week wasn't enough time for her to..uh..establish a relationship with another. Well, I guess I better get wise to rabbit breeding since I'm completely clueless. Precisely why Oreo is neutered as I didn't want to deal with it. Thanks for the input everyone! One more thing, if she appears to be pregnant will I have to separate her from Oreo? (Just wondering if maybe he'd try to harm the babies.)

I don't think he'd try to harm the babies.

I've bred show rabbits before...the females can get nasty and moody. So I keep them separate.

Rabbits if they are together with the opposite sex will more the likel mate. Most of them, even if they are brother and siter will mate. They are like guinea pigs, guinea pigs mate with all the emales, then once they have babies they mate again. Even if it's it's sisters! So by keeping them away from the wild rabbits would be a good thing to do. Also, if she isn't pregnant, they're good be a good reason for that, rabbits sometimes don't accept outside rabbits for a while, so that could be why they didn't mate!

when it comes to a female and male rabbit they dont need to be friends in order to do the dirty deed with each other. Only when the unfamiliar female and male are kept togther for some time will they attack each other (basically after they breed).

If she is pregant it is going to be hard to tell, the gestation is 28-31 days... by pushing on the belly you could cause her to abort them early. She will increase eating/drinking and gain some weight. Does she have a hutch with straw on her cage? If so and she is pregnant she will start to pull her hair out a day or two before she gives birth to form a nest. DO NOT touch the babies with your hands (instead move hair with straw or something). This will cause the female to kill and possibly start to eat her babies. They do this because they feel threatened (ya sounds nasty) If cats or dogs or any other animal lurks nearby it could set the female off to do this too. First time mothers get more freaked out and tend to kill their babies. After the babies start to hop around more it is ok to touch them (a few weeks). If you dont have a hutch or box for her to make a nest in she will pull some hair and have them but they will die fairly soon.

ummm im trying to think what else... I would think it is unlikely that she is prego but it is possible (but only takes one try). My faimly raise rabbits (along with many other tyoes of animals) when I was growing up. We had french angora, mini rex, rex, new zealand, mini lop, dutch, havana... and a few other breeds. I showed them in 4-H and also sold the babies for pets, breeding, and eating. There is tons of info on the internet.

It's very likely she could get pregnant and you don't want the male around her or the babies if she gives birth. You'll have to look into a special place to put her until you know for sure.

Also contact your local rabbit group or vet and get more info. Not sure how easy it would be to adopt out half wild/half domestic rabbits if you decide not to keep them.
