Dog Breeding Rant

My father and step mother are planning on breeding their 2 year old brindle boxer to some other brindle boxer because they got a free breeding and they want to 'make money'.

Their vet advices against it as do I. They are under the impression that the dog will carry the pups for 9 months like people. They are relying on google for all their breeding right now and enlisting me to tell them how to do it. I am not.

I have mentioned getting the bitch's hips xrayed before breeding and they refuse. They do not think it will cost anything because the breeding is free. They are ignoring food for mom and pups, vet care during the pregnancy, emergancy fees, shots for the dogs, etc.

They say "they will all go to good homes and if we sell them for $600 a dog, then that's easy money!"

Obviously they have it in their head to breed and I can't change that. Hopefully they will just screw up and she won't catch.

My head is going to explode.

Sorry, Spastic.

Unfortunately, there's no cure for stupidity or ignorance.

I feel sorry for the dog. Dogs often have complications with delivery. I hope nothing happens during labor/delivery to her.

Many times the bitch will retain a pup, and if she's not had ultrasounds during her pregnancy, the owners won't know. The dog dies an agonizing death when that happens.

That's what I'm worried about.
I tried to explain that concern with them and they just passed it off as a one in a million shot.
Being this is the first pregnancy, I told them about the vet care needed and it was also passed off.

The stud has not been screened either and though he is registered, he's not what I would call top quality.

They also have talked about having the new owners do docking and dew claws (she is a boxer) rather than spending the money to have it done as pups.

Hopefully they are lucky and the pregnancy goes well with the minimal vet assistance they are talking about. If they sell the pups as unregistered dogs who havent had their shots, etc done though Im not sure where these good homes and money are going to come from.

Just had to get this out.
Thanks, SR.

You're welcome to vent. That's what we're here for!

So, they're expecting to get $600 apiece for unregistered puppies? Good luck with that!

I paid $900 for my Great Dane 7 years ago, but I knew the breeder and she gave me a bargain. I registered her myself with the AKC, but that's only because the breeder believes the owner should be allowed to name the dog. She'll do it if you want her to, but I opted to do it myself.

I can't believe how many people think they're going to MAKE money on breeding animals. If you break EVEN, you should consider yourself lucky. But then, that's with the proper prenatal and post natal care.

Not only that but some times puppies can be 3 to 4 hours apart.

Dogs are like horses, they need to be shown to prove they are worthy of breeding. They need it more so than horses.

That's exactly what I've told them. But they have their minds made up and I guess they will just learn the hard way.

The pups will be able to be registered but won't be at the time the pup is sold.

It sucks, I know. Some people are only in it for the money, no matter the price the dog has to pay for their selfishness.

This sort of thing kills me! I'm looking for a good Great Dane breeder and there seem to be just as many wanna-bes as reputable breeders. I belong to a forum for the breed that has many articles about the risks and problems that go along with uninformed, barely planned breedings. I don't think I can post a link here but PM me and I'll give you the site. Maybe you could find something similar for the boxer breed with strong advocates against BYBs and show your parents the articles? Knock a smidge of sense into them possibly?

What is even worse than them doing it is there are people out there that will buy them and then they will feel like they were correct.

You should take them to a shelter. Boxers are a dime a dozen right now. I can get a full grown house broke, dew claws and tail removed, all shots, spayed or neutered for free. I'm not going to spend $600 on an unregistered, undocked, dewclawed puppy. Take them to a couple kill shelters and show them all the ads on petfinder and craigslist for Boxers. Maybe that will change their mind.
