Dreading tomorrow

I took Jethro (6 yo mixed breed) to the vet three weeks ago after noticing some alarming issues with serious weakness/immobility in his hind end.
The vet didn't see anything blatantly obvious as the cause and, at that time, we were thinking he had tweaked something due to the roughhousing he and Z (my GSD) do - so we went with a two week course of steroids.
The difference was night and day, he improved so much so fast and I was so hopeful that we had been right and it was just a bad "bump" that need a little extra umph to clear up
We were supposed to go back last week for follow-up and had to re-schedule due to the clinic being a doc short due to an illness. In the meantime, he was finished with his course of steroids.
Well, as he came off the steroids, it became very clear all is not well. His decline was faster and worse than first time around. We go in tomorrow morning - will probably do x-rays and go from there based on what we see going on back there....and I have a sinking feeling about what we will find
