Hard tumor on the side of dog's face?

A few weeks ago my friend asked me to come look at a lump on the side of her 1yo Newfie's face. It was maybe the size of a golf ball, located on the side of her snout, and hard as a rock. She was wanting to know if it was an allergic reaction or something. I told her no, I had no idea what is was, take her to the vet. After xrays and tests (I have no idea what tests were done) the vet couldn't figure out what it was. During the few weeks between the last time I saw here and now, the lump more than tripled in size. They scheduled surgery to remove the lump per the vet's recommendation.

A couple of days ago I went to another friend's house. She is puppy sitting a German Shepard puppy (considering keeping the puppy). Puppy has the exact same lump. Same location, rock hard. My friend said she hadn't noticed it when puppy first arrived and that she thought it was just a bump from rough housing with her other dog. I told her it wouldn't be hard if that's what it was. I also told her about the other friend and that I would let her know what the vet said once they removed it.

Neither dog seems to be experiencing an discomfort from the lumps. They didn't scratch at them, and pushing on/messing with the lumps doesn't bother them any.

The Newfie had surgery today to remove her lump. I got a call at work from my friend after. She was extremely upset because the vet told her the lump is a tumor and that they don't think the outcome will be good. That's all the info I was able to get since I was at work. My friend doesn't want to discuss it further right now so I don't have any more details.

I told the other friend about this and suggested they take the puppy to the vet right away. I don't know what the outcome will be there since the puppy is sort of between owners.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of tumor? The vet will be doing a biopsy but I was trying to get some idea of what this might be. I can't seem to find anything about tumors that are hard.
