They're only smelly when their cage and litterbox are not cleaned enough, in my experience. I have three and you cannot smell them unless you stick your nose right up in their fur. :)

I give myself very good advice, But I very seldom follow it

They do smell bad, and they poop alot, that is the only bad things I can say about them. I've had three, the first, and by far the best was a small dark eyed white female named Breeze. She was the funniest thing, her best friend (atleast until I lost him) was my cat Omen, if she didn't wake up when I opened the cage he'd climb in and drag her out by her scruff.

I took in two males, who were very sweet! But I could not get them potty trained (they liked to poop halfway down their ladder), so they got moved into the garage (I considered rehoming them, but Breeze liked them so much I hated to leave her alone again). After she died I found them a home w/ a crazy ferret lady (she already had 5 loose in her house), I gave her the cage to so I wouldn't be tempted to get another.

If it wasn't for the smell I'd definitely have another, probably more then one. (the smell is managable, but it's never completely gone, and the more freedom they have the more work it is)

Personally w/ what happened w/ the last one (sounds like Samual died horribly) I would not get another until you move out of your parents house.
