This little girl breaks my heart...

So my parents are always taking in stray cats that show up at their house. They feed them and love them for a few weeks then we find them new homes. All of them that show up are skinny and take awhile before we can pet them, but after a few feedings they become the greatest cats. Well, a few days ago my dad said that a cat was hiding in the barn and wouldn't come out. We figured she would come out when she got hungry enough. Sure enough, my mom opened the back door and yelled for to come look. She was the skinniest cat I've ever seen! We feed her and I took a closer look at her why she was eating. She was covered in mud and feces, was skin and bones, she has 7 toes on her front paws and 6 toes on her back. It looks like she can't retract some of her claws. I noticed she was having a hard time eating so after she finished I ran my hand under her chin and realized she has an awful under bite. She is the sweetest girl, loves attention and has a loud purr. This poor girl looks like the result of inbreeding-I've never seen a cat with so many defects. Anyone know if she can even clean herself properly with such a bad under bite? Also I think this girl needs a special name since she's such a special little girl Any ideas?

A polydactyl! Very neat. She is a pretty cat and will look amazing once all better.

When you catch her and vet her have them look at her jaw. It could be a break that didn't heal properly.

Aw poor kitty. Its nice that you will be able to take care of her and giver her a better chance in life. :)

My suggestion for a name would be: Bea or Fel (they apparently mean lucky). I find they would suit her since she's pretty darn lucky to have bumped into you guys.

She's going to the vet tomorrow or Wednesday if they are closed. In the meantime,is it safe to wash her in Dawn soap? The poor thing is so dirty and I think she has a hard time cleaning herself because of her bottom jaw. Or just I just leave her and hope she cleans herself now that she's getting food in her belly? I went out and bought some wet cat food since she had a hard time with the dry

I believe a shampoo for cats/dogs would be best, but I doubt using Dawn would hurt. Just make sure you rinse it off well and do not put too much. Try diluting it in the water first instead of directly massaging it into her, just in case she has sensitive skin or something.

I don't see how a severe underbite would affect her grooming habits. She will start grooming herself when she's feeling better, I'd give her another week before worrying about giving her a bath.

In the meantime, you can get a wet washcloth and "wet" her a big. That will often stimulate the need to groom.

So we did end up washing her down with a warm wet rag then wrap her in a towel. She purred the whole time then cruled up in my lap and went to sleep. :) she feels and looks so much better with just that little bit of attention. And smells better! The water looked the like chocolate milk when we stopped.

I had a three legged cat that looked just like her that I named Miracle but I called her Mira. I found Mira on the highway after she had been hit by a car as a baby. Her leg was broke in two places, her head was swollen and she had broken ribs sticking out of her skin. I can't believe she lived! Her leg had to be amputated and everything else healed nicely.

Thank you for helping that cat! So many people would just walk away and they really are precious. :0

Alexisrose your cat sounds like a special girl! Its amazing how after the horrible things these cats go through they are still the sweetest pets. This girl was loved by all our Christmas guest and my sister-in-law named her Grace :)
