A new breed of draft

Here we have Diego, my year old wolf/malamute cross and Apollo, my 3 year old wolf/shepherd cross, standing in since I don't have any real drafts, haha. Diego is still a pup so still in training, but he pulls a skateboard (no weight) and knows hike, gee, haw, and ho.

Apollo I just started working with, as he seemed really interested when I got out the harness. I have some husky crosses that love to pull but they don't have the mind to stop or listen to commands very well, the brats. They're like racing TB's; they just want to whip around the track as fast as possible! So far Apollo just knows hike and ho.

Just thought you guys would like to see! Maybe I can eventually get them to cart the feed bags and bales around the farm for me, haha. Or be the first Floridians to win the Iditarod! ;P

How did you manage to get wolf cross pups? I didn't know there were wolves in Florida. Someone here in Canada advertised wolf cross pups and Natural Resources scooped them up and had them DNA'd. The pups had no wolf blood in them. If they did the owner would have faced some heavy fines. Often if a dog bitch is in heat a male will lure her toward the others then they will kill her and eat her.

Haha, I'm sorry if that was misleading! When I said cross, I didn't mean wild wolf/domestic dog as a 50/50 split. Diego is an F3, or 3 generations from a pure or very high content wolfdog and he came from South Carolina. Meaning his parents were wolfdogs, his grandparents, etc. So he displays more doggy characteristics than Apollo, F2, or Echo, F1. And while his pedigree percentage is the same as Apollos, there's no real way to determine exactly what percentage they inherited. Wolfdogs are legal in Florida without a license as long as they are distinguishable as domestic pets and not full on wolves.

I love wolf hybrids. My aunt has had two. The last one put down this fall due to spine issues. Much larger than yours though. I think hers was 53% wolf and it was mostly arctic I think? The ones that are built like bricks with super long fur.

Saddlebag, the majority of wild wolves around here that bother livestock are actually hybrids. People can't handle the discipline of a wolf hybrid and they let them loose or they just get loose and reproduce unfortunately.

But those are some lovely dogs.

If somebody dumped these kinds of dogs on my doorstep...they would be keepers.
Apollo is sure one nice looking dog....

I know some breeders like to breed the giants, but I prefer the more typical size, 70-100 pounds for me! It's a little easier on their joints and bones and on my wallet for dog food and meat scrap, haha!

And unfortunately a lot of wolfdogs do get loose, they are intelligent and love to wander, and sometimes don't come home again. Mine have pretty good recall but I wouldn't trust them out loose all day like we keep our Chow Chow.
