Jeeze, I wasn't trying to insult you CHILD. I was trying to be nice and consoling. Be mad and pout, then. I hope the lady that got the dog enjoys her and loves her.

You asked if you were out of line to be upset, people have stated their reasoning for believing that you are and you are getting angry at them for that -- so why did you ask if you didn't want them to answer?
The fact is that until contracts are signed and payment has been made, nothing is official and the animal in question is still available for adoption by the first person to complete the process - which was not you.

Sorry, LadyDreamer. That wasn't directed at you...or anyone in particular. I just felt that some of the responses I got were treating me like a child who had a toy taken away and is now throwing a temper tantrum, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Not throwing a temper tantrum or even threatening to. Just trying to find out if this is something rescues do on a regular basis...which it seems like they do.

I am not meaning to be snarky. Sorry. Just upset and not feeling well.

I guess my point is that the rescue didn't even give us a chance. We completed everything but meeting the lady from the rescue, but I'd think that if you had someone willing to drive FOUR HOURS just to meet the dog, you'd give them a chance. I know our humane society will hold a dog if you've filled out an application for the dog and just need to set up a time to do a meet and greet with your dog. They've done it for me before with a jack russell (that ended up not liking my dog).

I understand why you're upset but from what you wrote I didn't get the impression that it was a done deal. Just a meet n greet.

I hope another dog turns up for you.

I would copy and paste the email she sent me, but for some reason this computer won't let me access my email (I'm at work, using a work computer, but I've accessed my email from here before). Maybe we read it wrong, but both my boyfriend and I assumed from the way the emails were worded that Sophie was ours, we just had to pick her up and pay the adoption fee. *shrug* Guess we were wrong.

From the rescue's perspective they must have to deal with many who back out. People get caught up in an idea, then when they've had a little more time to think about it, fail to show or back out. The rescue had no idea if this is what was going on so an opportunity to definitely rehome the dog came along and that's what they did.

I do agree with you, I would be really upset too! I have heard of other shelters and rescues doing that. I would hate to hear about the person that took the dog as a trail and it didn't work out and then you were no longer interested because you found another or something. That would be too bad!!

Good luck in your search! I own a Cairn Terrier and they are wonderful, smart and great dogs!! Once you find your perfect dog, please post pics :)

You filled out an aplication, that's all. Unless you put down a payment, the dog is still available. Sorry you feel you got burned, but the right dog will come along.

I understand you being upset, and honestly, I would be too. That said, after working in rescue for years, unless the adoption fee has been paid, nothing is guaranteed. If I had someone standing in front of me who said "I'll take the dog today" and they were just as good as the home who couldn't make it that day, I'd send the dog with the folks who were standing in front of me too. It's NOT a reflection on you, or what kind of home you would be. But getting that dog out THAT DAY frees up a shelter kennel or a foster home three days sooner, which is better for that dog and better for the dog that can now fill that empty slot in the rescue and hopefully find a home too.
