Sheep!

I am just about to get into sheep, already getting the paddock ready for them :) I settled on the Katahdin hair sheep for a breed. This will be my first time owning sheep, so any tips? I know only the basics, like feed, shelter, ect. So, do you prefer ewes or wethers? I am only getting two, and hopefully I can find some that were bottle raised. Going to look at some on Sunday, what are some questions I should ask the seller? Thanks!

Hiya a frend of mine is a sheep farmer and if you need any advice I could ask him.
I use to have 2 sheep thay both were rams the eldest one was rambo why
He got the name he kept head butting every thing.
He was a rear breed hebredian from scotland he was in b bad shape when my frend geoff found him he was running a mock in a high street.
And he gave him to me.
The other was larry he was a welsh cross suffolk.
I taught him to sit and I taught them to stand on there hind legs as well like a dog would jump up you.
I have loads of photos of them and thay tought me alot and I have a lot of respect for them sheep are quite intelegent when you spend time with them.

I use to have them shorn once a year I trimed there feet as well and you have to cruch them cut the wool from around there tail and hind legs as thay can get fly strike and blow fly maggots can get in.
You can worm them we use a rumivite block with panicure wormer in it.
Don't feed 2 much hard feed as crystle litus crystles will form in the urinal tract and is fatle.
I did not dip mine at all as there was only 2 of them not a whole flock.
And I use to bath them at home in the back yard.
Id take them out for walks on collars and leads and thay both had brass dog tags with there names on.
Well thease were spoilt.
Rambo had a blue coat and larry had a red one.
Thay had them on when I took them out for a walk in the rain as I did not want to get there fleases wet as it would soak there beding.
I will make you laugh I use to take them to the dog parlor thay had a bath and were in the local paper it gave her a lot of work from the paper.
And thay were sprayed with calone.
Thay have been on the bus and on the train.
I have had such good times with them I think thay are the best.
And I use to walk them out with our 2 dogs as well.

We have Katahdin hair sheep! Best breed ever IMHO :) We have never had a wether, just rams and ewes and lots of lambs :) They are all easy to handle except one ram is a jerk.
If you have good pasture they shouldn't need any feed.
Some are parasite resistant, which is a plus but you can only tell that for sure if the breeder has actually done tests.
The questions you ask will depend on what you're looking for, but if they're good breeders they will probably volunteer a lot of info.

We have Katahdin sheep, and agreed, they are great! We had some other breeds to start with but we like the Katahdins the best. They seem to be very docile and have sweet personalities. We only have 7 at the moment, one ram and 6 ewes. We have market grade and have them for pasture maintnence. We're going to have to sell the ram soon, as we rotate every two years to prevent breeding back on daughters, and I really hate to see him go. He's the best one that we've had yet, not aggressive at all and very gentlemanly to the ladies :)
