Sugar, the new Bichon Frise

After the loss of Crystal, I started looking for another Bichon to share our lives with. There doesn't seem to be any certified breeders in Alberta, and the one in Saskatchewan was 6 hours away, and the one in BC was 11 hours away!

Kijiji only turned up Bichon crosses. I tried the local rescues, SPCA and Humane Society, and they had no Bichons. Then I found a shelter in Lacombe who had two males and three females for adoption! They were going to be at the Edmonton PetSmart for a mass adoption and I could see them all.

This is my new little lady, Sugar. She's 4 or 5 years old as far as they could tell. She came from a breeder who was going out of business. She's spayed and has all her shots. She travelled beautifully, and now we're starting the process of getting to know each other.

She's watching me today while I was on the computer.

Oh she is just too cue.

I am so sorry for your loss. No idea how I'll be able to make it when my George's time is up. I'll be an absolute mess, just thinking about it makes me cry. :'''''(

Sugar looks like a sweetheart. So innocent!

Itís been two weeks since Sugar joined our family.

The first day, I put her out on our large deck (with the stairways blocked off with a 4' gate) and in 15 minutes she had jumped the gate and was snuffling around the yard. I went to catch her (while in my nightgown btw) and a lovely game of ďcatch me if you canĒ ensued. She took off down the driveway and up the road with Harley the Siberian husky in on the fun. Yeah, real fun for me, hoping my few neighbours didnít see me early in the morning in my nightgown and slippers chasing a dog.

Harley finally bowled her over and I was able to grab her and scoop her up. Trudging back down the road to my house in a now muddy nightgown and dirty slippers, the little bundle of joy was deposited back inside the house.

She now goes out with a harness on a lunge line. Iíve given the neighbours enough entertainment.

Sometimes I wrestle with my demons. Sometimes we just snuggle.

Ooh, I missed your first post introducing your new baby. Congratulations, I hope you have many happy years ahead with Sugar - proper mischief maker by the looks of her!

First trip to the vet to be checked out and to introduce her went well

She's a good dog, good size, not overweight with no major problems.

She was digging at her ears and those were checked. She has a yeast infection; this is common with dogs who have long hair on hanging down ears. So I get to massage some medication into her ears twice a day. She likes that.

She also has allergies. This has triggered excessive weeping from the eyes and excessive grooming/biting at the pads of her paws. She gets a steriod pill twice a day to help the allergies. She doesn't like that. We also picked up some new food for dogs with allergies. Not to worry! We didn't just get rid of the old food but are mixing it more and more with the allergy food so her stomach doesn't get upset.

The vet told us the flea collar was useless and could be harmful if she ever gets it off and chews on it. Out goes the flea collar. Her weekly baths will include medicated shampoo so she doesn't get fleas

So the meds, the check up, the shots and the wormer came to two hundred dollars and change, but the big things are still coming up.

It appears she never had her teeth done and three molars are absessing. That's $500.00 to fix.

The previous breeder owners kept breeding her with mastitis and she has a sizable lump around one nipple. It doesn't bother her; she's not scratching at it or licking it and does't yelp when it's manipulated. That will be a future surgery at $600.00.

It's good we can split these two things up to help with financing them, and Sugar will be getting both of these done. For now she's a happy, healthy little doggie that loves her new home!
