The dog food you need is the one your dog does well on- unfortunately just like horses, there is no 'one size fits all' diet that is guaranteed to result in a happy, non-itchy, non-smelly, happy gut dogs. I've seen dogs do well on everything from Old Roy and Beneful to nutritionist formulated specialty homemade diets.
IME, the crappy cheap foods result in gassy greasy dogs who poop a lot and you have to feed a lot so you have to buy a lot. Out of all the dogs I see in my practice, it's only a rare few that really seem to do well on those, but they do exist. My dad's dogs always did very well on Iams. My own (who have various medical issues) have done well on different prescription diets, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, Innova Evo, and now the Smartpak food. I like that it just shows up at my house when I need it, and my dogs are happy and healthy. I also feed them people food- leftovers and the like (avoiding chocolate, grapes, onions, etc) since I figure that's what dogs were domesticated on anyway.
