Suggestions for a Bareback Pad
I'm looking to get a bareback pad, with a girth-type thing attached. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type? Riding Jubilee bareback isn't that comfortable because she has such high withers. I thought a pad would help. Maybe something extra cushiony?
!!! Just wanted to post the same today, but you were ahead of me. :) Can you, folks, share experience and suggestions, please?
I'm not sure if its concidered a bareback pad or not. Cashel has a thing called the soft saddle that looks really interesting. It has stirrups though, I know those can be dangerous on a bareback pad. I think the Cashel is more a cross between a bareback pad and a saddle though. Plus its pretty pricey.
Thanks, Vida! I do remember someone mentioned Cashel before. I'll look.
Not a huge fan of stirrups on bareback pads. Even the Cashels, where they insist they have better stirrup placement...nah. Too many focused pressure points and not enough stability for the rider. For a typical tb back (*shudder* I hurt just thinking about it...) I'd recommend looking for something with fleece. However, fleece-lined pads are the cream of the bareback pad crop and will usually run you several hundreds of dollars.
Something like that...
You could always try ebay for a bargain :D
Personally, I hate bareback pads because they seem to throw you off balence more and they dont provide you with alot of support. But my friend has a TWH and she likes the bareback pads since he has high withers. Dont get a bareback pad with stirrups...they are dangerous and worthless. Another friend of mine tried that and her mare got sore withers from the stirrups. If you want to ride with a "bareback pad" with stirrups, try a natural ride pad or something that actually has a tree to support the stirrups/and has the option to be taken off.
Thanks a lot, guys!
Sara, the price is just oh my God! I rather just ride without one and wash my pants more ofter (the main reason I'm looking for one). :)
Moomoo, you are right ebay is a good place to check it out. I kinda forgot about it. :)
P.S. I heard number of times having stirrups is very dangerous. Why is that? Can get caught?
The only place to attach stirrups on a bareback pad is at the top of the girth...even if you have a second girth strap, it still puts your stirrup well forward of the balance point. Also, bareback pads are not nearly as stable as a saddle and more prone to slippage. Unbalanced rider+sliding pad is a recipe for disaster.
I have this kind.
I got it as a birthday present last year. It's really comfortable and i feel it has just the right amount of padding. Vega doesn't have really high withers, but they sure are bony. I needed something. It has never slipped on me, even if she got sweaty.
The only thing i don't like about it is that i got bruises on my legs where the buckle is for the girth. Though i was wearing shorts. When i used my chaps, it didn't hurt. It could have been my position though too.
And for the price, i think you can't go wrong.
