Riding on the side of the Highway????

Should you face traffic or ride with traffic?

Since having my horse 3 months, I usually ride with traffic and actually tried facing also.

I prefer facing. The horse KNOWS what's making the noise and where its coming from.
Rather than riding with and your horse spooks and bolts.
How close are you riding to the highway? I'd ride a few hundred yards away rather than 40 or 50 feet. Much safer and it allows your horse to adjust better.

i like facing, some people dont see horses very much and they like to honk when they see someone riding ...arg....plus when things go by that are noisy, semis and motorcycles, they can see them.....seems safer to me

Well when you walk on a road you are supposed to walk into traffic... It might be legally or just the sort of "common knowledge" stuff. I don't ride on the road since I live in a rural area and it would be rather pointless :)

on the immediate side of the road lol. Surely don't have hundreds of yards. Maybe 3-4 ft

With traffic. Always with traffic. Although riding against might be easier on you it's completely illegal. When Ridin on roads (web on the shoulder or grass) you are supposed to behave like a vehicle. Obey traffic signals and go with traffic. I've been Pulled over on horseback for this and 2 friends have received tickets for riding on the wrong side (marked improper lane usage).

if your that close or on the road, you have to ride with, but its safer to ride 50-100 feet off the road and go against (i'm thinking of a highway or gravel road though where you can....)

not sure where you guys live but only places around here thats like that is a dirt or rock roads thats running along side the highway. Let me add its a 2 lane highway i am talking about, at least the one down my road where I live.

other than riding on side of roads, have to find some trails and stuff and sort of limited where i live. That's why i'm looking for a trailer now to be able to go meet friends
