Shaving the mane

I have a western pleasure horse and saw that another western pleasure horse had a shaved mane. Is banding the mane falling out of style?

I hope not! I despise shaved manes. How did this horse place?

Sometimes you just buzz it if your horse has a thin short mane, and their is no hope. Like if my appys mane doesn't get long enough to braid for hunters I am going to roach it. It is barely long enough to band.

Hogging is the correct term not shaving the mane, so the horse you saw had a hogged mane.

Buzz, it depends on the country you live in what the correct term is. In my area they call it "roaching". I'm sure there are many other names as well.

I have a student with a haffie who had a HORRIBLY thick mane. There was no way to thin it or make it easy to live with. It was even too thick for an easy running braid. She decided to roach it and I love it, too.
