The two are linked. A horse cannot have rhythm unless the rider does as well. The horse looks to the rider to maintain rhythm and tempo. A car does not dictate the speed that it travels on the road, just as a horse does not dictate the speed it travels under saddle.
As a rider, it is out job to find and maintain our horse's rhythm.

but is there anything besides endlessly trotting around the ring... besides trot poles?

yes mam, there is a list of exercises to practice rhythm,do you want to start at a walk or a trot?

Paint Mom 10-18-2011 03:20 PM

walk, then trot, then canter : )!

we will start here, and if you dont understand something, please let me know.ok,start off with smooth diagonals up and down the pen, easing him to the right with your left leg and vice versa.when he is steady and comfortable at a walk, then do it at a trot.but hold his nose just a little in the same direction your applying leg pressure.ask him to lead with his shoulder, then his rib cage.if you canget him to do this, the next thing we will do is adjust him to a smooth side pass and crossing his feet over correctly.let me know how you are doing.
