First Time Showing
Some of you may remember me posting a thread about my riding in a fairly serious show for the first time. Well, it never ended up happening but I got birthday money this time around and my Dad officially approved of me showing next weekend :D.

My instructor has me marked down for the lesson horse I've ridden for the past month or so, Lucky. There's a picture of her in my avatar and here's one from further away:

The show is set like a real show but it's still intended to be for fun. You don't have to wear show clothes (but you're still expected to dress nicely).

The show starts at 9a.m. and here's what I'm doing:

W/T Division:
Class 10: W/T Pleasure
Class 11: W/T Cavaletti

W/T Poles:
Class 12: W/T Equitation on the flat
13 or 14: Pole course Equitation

W/T Games:
Class 15: Command Class

Does this look like a good schedule and what time should I arrive at the barn to get Lucky groomed in time? My cousin will be coming to help me out and be my groom.

Anyways I was just hoping for some tips. What should I bring? What should I keep in mind? Also, I know people use baby powder on white markings. Are you supposed to only use it on the feet or can you use it on the face too as long as you're careful?

Never heard about the baby powder thingy.

Is the show at your barn? or do you have to trailer there? That makes a huge difference. If at your barn, will you do braids? That takes time. Do you have a heated wash rack to give a bath? (can be done the night before, but only if heated area, now that weather is getting cold)

come to barn is grubbies, put on show breeches and boots just before show.
Make sure your groom has a good rag for last minute buffin of your boots when in the saddle.
a haynet with a flake of hay is good, if you have to tie in between classes and wait very long.
if you have a shiny helmet, a velvet helmet cover makes it look dandy.

eat a good breakfast!

It's at my barn thankfully! And yes, I will do braids.

I will remember to do all this (hopefully ). And I will definitely have to eat a good breakfast because I'm not sure how much if any food will be there.

Corn starch works better than baby powder, it's a bit more dense and stays better. Use it with a tooth brush & brush it into white legs. You can use it on the face too but I've found the easiest for face markings is a stick of chalk. Be sure to do white on legs before you use hoof polish if you plan to. Baby oil eyes, ears (inside & out) and muzzle. Clean udder/sheath and under the tail. A lot of folks forget that, it's one of the first things I look at when judging a showmanship class. Make sure all of your tack is clean and all of your keepers are used, especially on an english bridle.

Be sure you are clean & tidy. Keep a towel handy and wipe down your horse & your boots before you enter each class.

The most important thing, don't forget your smile and have fun!!!!

I use baby powder on my loan cob when I show her, works wonders! Leave yourself PLENTY of time in the morning, I'd say i you're there about 7.30, time to get yourself & the horse ready & warm up. Better to have spare time than rush everything :)

Thanks MH, I was wondering how I would put anything powdery on without making a huge mess. And thanks HorseyGal, I was wondering what would be a good time to arrive and have everything ready.

Anybody else have anything to say? :D

You're welcome! What time depends on how much you do the night before. Are you planning to braid the evening before or that morning? Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for any prep you have to do, warm up your horse and allow for a few minutes for yourself to sit down and relax prior.

Good luck! Be sure to share pictures with us!

That morning. The first division is jumping with eightish classes if that helps any, and then I have W/T Equitation happening before my first class.

And yeah I will make sure to get lots of pictures! :D

baby powder or corn starch in a nylon stocking knotted at one end works great. Also, doggy pet wipes work well in cleaning up the extra powder, do you clip? baby oil gel around the eyes and nose to make it shine depends on what your showing in...
