Critique Potential Buy
I'm looking for a project, something that has potential. I want to event and do jumpers or hunters 3'-3'3" and maybe take to college. I found an ad I really liked and asked for more info and I'm a little concerned about a few things.
They said he has "green moments" and that he "falls int corners" and "needs light contact or he'll pull"
Here's the info I got:
He jumps very flat & rides around unbalanced & much too on the forehand. Some of the jumping flat is that the rider sits back & then throws her body slightly to catch up & doesn't always have the best release, although how round he will ever jump is also questionable, correct position should help his legs square up some though. The balance issues just takes time and work, you should be able to fix the riding on the forehand/heaviness some, but especially if he is a OTTB, I don't know that you'll ever fully fix it. He's a nice mover, if you got him jumping rounder & to quit the mouth thing(I think if you followed the horses mouth with your hand, he'd quit the head shaking), he'd be more a hunter than a jumper. He's a nice horse, and could be quite nice, with lots of time & work.
I agree with most of what kaykat31 wrote, BUT I don't like his confo, or the way he moves at all, he looks butt high, and lightweight in the neck and chest area, could be just lacking muscle, or he's just a lightweight on the forend. Personally i'm sure you can find a "project" horse that looks and moves alot better.
I asked for a confo pic and they sent me this. She said it was from when they first got him so it's not completely up to date. They're offering a really good deal for him adn his conformation doesn't look too bad to me. What do you guys think? Anything that stands out to you? (they said he has more muscle and weight now, but anything else?)
I'm not awesome at judging confo, except for our ponies that do modeling classes, we don't look at it too much. Our vet does point out risky points in the pre-purchease exams so I know alittle. Mostly, his front legs appear too far back & under him and I don't like his butt/hip muscling in that pic. When I said he moved as a nice hunter, I didn't mean a top A show hack winner, he just moves decently nice, but I personally have alot more O/F Hunter winners, than hack winners, most of mine are 4-7 in the hack classes, but looking closer, he could use more reach forward in his back legs, that might get better with dressage work & getting him off the forehand.
i know the girl selling this horse
Bump? Anything else?
