My gelding colicked again, twice within 2 months, both mild gas colic. I am wondering if anyone else has had success with precautionary steps? What are your gas colic experiences? The vet suggested maybe adding sand clear for fiber to keep him regular.
What are you feeding and how old is your horse and how much turn out does he get? I've had some gassy horses but have not had problems with gas colic except for one mare who was sent out to be bred. She was on a NO grain diet because of laminitis issues and she went out to be bred. They messed up an fed her a draft horse ration of grain and she had a horrible gas colic and ultimately foundered. She came back from all that and lived another 10 years but I was always very careful that she didn't get grain.
The vet guessed his age at 16 or so. He is stalled over night only, but we are thinking of leaving him out unless the weather is horrible (freezing rain, etc), in any case he is out most of the time. Diet is grass hay (about 8 flakes per day, spread out) & assurance ration balancer with cosequin once a day.
I heard that stretching every day can help. Like... when you stretch in the morning, a lot of people well fart. It's kind of the same concept with horses LOL, that's what I heard. Works for Indie, haven't ever had colic in her life *knocks on wood*
Which probiotic is best? Stretching is a good idea too!
