Winter Riding Lesson Ideas
I teach riding lessons to beginner and intermediate riders. I am looking for some fun riding games or exercises that we can do over the winter in my smaller indoor riding area (60x60). I won't have more than 2 students at a time because of the size. We have done things like Simon Says and Red Light Green Light. Any fun obstacle courses you have done or any games on bareback?
ride a buck!
With two riders make them do pas de deux. They don't have to be complicated, but are a fun element to work and repeat what they have learned, teaches quick thinking and teaches them to be aware of the other rider as they need to stay synched and considerate of what the partner does. We did those all the time especially when we had 8+ riders in one lesson (Germany and Austria often have huge groups ;) ...)
Also Prepares the way for a potential performance for the parents. And really, you can make it as easy as needed for a beginner, or as advanced as you have riders.
:) Have fun. I wish we had an Arena ;) indoor, that is...

Let's see, place a piece of paper the size of a dollar bill under the rider's leg and see who makes it around the arena without losing it. Place two barrels at each end. Pick up a tennis ball from one, head for the other and set the ball on the upended barrel. If it falls off rider has to dismount, remount and set the ball again. Two barrels make it a race. It's fun even at a walk and certainly helps the kids with balance and confidence. I use three balls per barrel. Ride horse to one of three pails set upended, dismount on to pail, walk across other two and remount. You can time that one with your watch. It's amazing how many horses won't do this but have a log or trot pole on the ground, begin to ride over the log but stop the horse before a hind steps over. Wonderful for teaching timing. The horse has to settle and wait for the rider to ask it to move on. Of get half over and side pass off the end. The log helps the horse more than the rider.
